Rdio doesn’t have things like smart playlists and ratings, so I’ve been creating monthly playlists for tracks I like and then syncing those to my phone.

Here’s my New In February 2011 playlist where you’ll see tracks from new releases like James Blake’s self-titled album, Mogwai’s Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, and Toro Y Moi’s Underneath The Pine. I also enjoyed Machinedrum’s Want to 1 2? and Hot Toddy’s Late Night Boogie.

Meanwhile streaming service Rdio counts over 17,000 plays for the new Cake album.

As album purchases become a thing of the past we’re going to need a new metric. I’m not sure if it’s going to be scrobbles.

I set myself a half-day project to write music specifically for shuffle mode – making use of randomness to try and make something more than the sum of its parts. The ever-brilliant Russell Davies (who works a few desks away at the BRIG) sowed the seed of the idea in my head around January 2011.

Over an hour or so, I wrote a series of short, interlocking phrases (each formatted as an individual MP3) that can be played in any order and still (sort of) make musical sense.

Makes you feel like you’re using an iPod AND it doesn’t endlessly loop the music.

Guy 1: Uhh – Rdio streaming is horrible!! Not as good as spotify by far.
Guy 2: No way. I have a Soundblaster XTIWTFBBQ and Rdio sounds as good as my 320kbps MP3s.
Rdio: We limit the bitrate on 3G streaming so your cell phone company doesn’t screw you over. We stream CD quality everywhere else.
Guy 3: CD Quality? P’shaw! What do you think that means?
Guy 4: Rhapsody sounds the best!
Guy 1: There’s no mids in the Rdio streams!

Smash Mouth had to go rerecord parts of their 1999 hit “All Star” for a TV ad when the digital master was missing tracks. Engineers at EMI have discovered that drums and percussion effects on some Eighties recordings are gone. As a result, engineers are sometimes forced to reconstruct these effects themselves. “You open a session even from 10 years ago, and it might have a plug-in that’s not supported, so you don’t have that effect anymore,” says Greg Parkin, VP of archives at EMI. “Our guys are becoming detectives — it’s a booming industry.”
