AirPlay is something I use every day, and also something that shocks friends I have over for existing. That’s not a good thing.— Kyle Baxter (@kbaxter) July 24, 2013
I’ve had the same experience. People are blown away with Airplay streaming, especially when compared to the hassle of hooking up a laptop to a projector or conference room TV. Airplay is included with the iOS devices (and some Macs) they use every day, yet they don’t even know it exists.
As I understand it, Apple charges a licensing fee for adding Airplay to audio equipment. I question if this is a good idea. Nearly everything with Airplay support costs $50-100 extra than similar audio equipment with BlueTooth support.
That may explain some of Airplay’s obscurity, yet even if Apple eliminated the license fee I’m sure that some manufacturers would have second thoughts about including a technology that encouraged the adoption of a competing media ecosystem.
