Why doesn’t iOS messages use avatars?— John Gruber (@gruber) April 4, 2013
@patr1ck New question: Why don’t iMessage accounts have avatars? (Also, iPad Messages does use them from address book.)— John Gruber (@gruber) April 4, 2013
I’m curious about where people grab their avatars from. Mountain Lion introduced a feature that slurps Avatars from Facebook and Twitter and puts them into contacts. But to make it real rock solid Apple would need to link Avatars to people’s Apple IDs. You can do this now in Game Center…but nobody uses Game Center, at least not until Letterpress came out.
iTunes Ping also asked users for avatars, but insinuated that somebody at Apple actually had to look and approve your picture.
Avatars are tricky because in some way it means getting into the online identity business like Gravatar, Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of that stuff.
