NPR’s Deceptive Cadence looks at the trend of low prices for digital copies of the 99 Most Essential whatevers and what EMI Classics has been doing.
I don’t like those Essentials collections because they don’t feel like there’s much thought behind them. But I can get behind something like Complete Beethoven Sonatas that has been Mastered for iTunes.
And why Beethoven? Because he’s been dead for centuries and won’t crab about not getting a cut. And everyone knows who Beethoven is. I don’t expect we’ll see this kind of pricing anytime soon on, for example, that Steve Reich box set.
