Sometimes you don’t need an icon

John Gruber on Microsoft’s insistence on using a floppy disk as a save icon in Microsoft Office 2011 as show in these leaked screenshots.

Icon for the Save button is still a floppy disk, despite the fact that Apple hasn’t sold a machine with a floppy drive for a decade.

I wondered how Apple does this. How does Apple show the meaning of save for saving to a hard drive?

They don’t.

No Save icon in Numbers

No save icon in Keynote

No Save button in Pages

No Save icon in Logic Pro

You want to save? Go up to File, or hit Command+S.

Microsoft could’ve solved this problem by choosing not to solve it.
