Gene Simmons on New Music Business Models

Gene Simmons is getting some flack because of his comments about how record labels should have sued college students immediately after they saw P2P music-sharing becoming a problem.

But I do agree with him on one thing that’s bothered me about new recorded music business models. The idea of using music as a vehicle to sell concert tickets and other merchandise seems fundamentally flawed to me, but I can’t articulate why. Neither can Gene Simmons.

So what if music just becomes free and artists make their living off of touring and merchandise?
Well therein lies the most stupid mistake anybody can make. The most important part is the music. Without that, why would you care?
