I Recommend SuperDuper!

This past weekend I ordered a new hard drive from NewEgg. I had a 160gig drive and had been meaning to move up to something larger and keep my music projects on the old drive.

$130 later I’m the proud owner of a 500 gig Samsung drive.

The plan was this: move everything on my Powermac’s stock drive over to the new drive, make sure everything was A-OK, and reformat the 160gig drive for music projects and audio recording. What’s the best way to do that?

I’ve been using SuperDuper for almost a year now. It’s a great backup utility. It comes with complete backup presets for your whole system and just your user directories. It’s “Smart Backup” also lets you backup only what’s changed. If you’re ambitious you can even make your own backup scripts. I made one that backed up my user directory without my iTunes library.

I figured that the best way to do this was to copy the stock drive right to the Samsung drive in SuperDuper. After about 90 minutes of copying later I was up and running with the Samsung drive. No problems so far. Only thing I felt I had to do was remove the stock drive and rename the Samsung drive to the same name I had for the stock drive in OSX. I’ll give this a week or so before reformatting the old drive.

Even with Time Machine on the horizon I don’t regret getting SuperDuper.
